SELF PORTRAIT PROJECT

DRAWING II: SELF PORTRAIT

So far this semester you have worked from direct observation of live models. Working from photographic references is also a valid form of artmaking. You will have some freedom in this next project, and I want you to be creative. On Tuesday, November 24, we will spend class time as a photo shoot for self portraits. Your job is to plan the “design” of your photo shoot. The self portrait will be a traditional bust composition (upper chest and all of the face.) Decide if you want to wear special clothing or a costume, and bring that and any props you need to class on Monday. To make it more interesting, you must have a background from a different photographic source, which you must find and bring to class. Maybe you want the background to be Paris at night. Maybe it’s from one of your own photographs. Maybe you want it to be a microscopic view of DNA. Or perhaps thousands of bicycles. Be creative with the choice of background, and be thoughtful about it. Don’t just pick a random image to be your background. We will use a grid to draw from the photographs – a technique that you will find helpful for keeping accurate proportions. We will also use Photoshop to combine the faces and backgrounds. If you bring an actual photograph for the background, we can use the scanner to turn it into a digital image.

For Tuesday you need to bring:
Clothing or props
A photographic source for the background
Mechanical pencil
Ruler (if you have one)

If you do not want to draw on your regular drawing paper, you are free to bring in your own choice of paper (minimum size 22x30".) Hobby Lobby has a decent selection of papers sold by individual sheet. You also might consider a colored paper. If you do decide to buy a special sheet of paper, use this rule of thumb -- if you can afford it, always buy an extra sheet! And consider the tooth of the paper - if it's really smooth your drawing will be smooth; if it's really rough, the texture will show up.

HOMEWORK DUE 11/19

I handed out packets of the figure drawing examples you all submitted in class. Look at the packet and do 5 minute gesture drawings of the figures on the first 5 pages. (This should take a total of 25 minutes.) Do as much as you can in that five minute period - you should start out gesturally, but keep working the drawing for the full five minutes, all the while getting more and more precise.

Note - The pages in the packet might have more than one figure - if this is the case, choose only one figure from that page to draw.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Drawing the human form and study of anatomy in composition.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is designed for intense visual study of the human figure. The rendering of human anatomy has been a tradition among artists since early hunter-gatherers made the first crude and simple cave paintings, and visual styles have changed greatly over time. This course focuses on a traditional, academic approach to rendering the human figure. You will study artists of the High Renaissance who perfected the discipline, and the drawings you produce should be created with the same attention to detail, style, and methodology as the Old Masters.

CONTENT OUTLINE
Students will be introduced to various approaches to figure drawing with a variety of materials and techniques, including:
Contour/blind contour
Linear/structural form
Gesture
Tonal/Value form

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students enrolled in Drawing II must have completed ART 1010 (2-D Design) and ART 1040 (Drawing I).

CLASS WEBSITE
Homework assignments, due dates, and class announcements will be made available on the class website. You are expected to check the website weekly, and you must have and utilize an APSU email account.

IN-CLASS DRAWING
Students are required to complete several drawings over the course of the semester. A complete list of in-class drawings will be posted on the class website, and requirements for each will be made clear. Keep all of your drawings in a clean safe place. A midterm portfolio and a final portfolio with a specified list of drawings culled from the semester’s achievements will be submitted on specified due dates, and work must be presented in a professional manner.

College drawing classes are different from high school art classes in that this is a time for concentrated work, not socializing. Please respect the serious atmosphere of the studio. Since drawing requires total concentration, I ask that you please refrain from chatting during the drawing sessions. There will be plenty of time for socializing during the breaks.

OUT-OF-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS
Writing Assignments: Lectures and Exhibitions
Students are required to attend and write about three APSU visual art events this semester. A brief 150-word summary of each event is to be turned in within one week of attending the event. There are a wide variety of options open to you, from gallery openings and exhibitions to lectures and on-line presentations. Be sure to work these into your schedule.

Sketchbook/Homework
Sketchbooks are due EVERY Thursday. Sketchbook assignments and all other homework will be posted on the class website on Thursdays (a week in advance.) Always bring your sketchbook to class. We may use them for warm-up exercises.

ATTENDANCE
Attendance will be taken sometime near the beginning of each class period. You must be here when I call your name. I need to watch you work to be able to help you. If you come to the studio after attendance is called it is your responsibility to make sure that I change you from absent to tardy in my attendance book. Insist on watching me do it.

A student may miss two classes over the course of the semester without excuse, and three additional classes with a documented excuse of an unavoidable absence (such as an emergency doctor's appointment or jury duty). With more than five absences, I reserve the right to fail the student automatically. I will not excuse absences for alarm clock malfunctions, misplaced car keys, or other preventable circumstances. Talk to me if you are unsure if an absence will be excused or not. *Two tardies and/or leaving class early will result in an unexcused absence.

GRADING
Academic realism is similar to mathematics in that there are specific techniques that are done correctly or incorrectly, therefore the grading process is not subjective. Each major drawing will receive a numerical grade based on a rubric of four or more categories. This rubric will be made available to the student at the beginning of each drawing. Many students are often under the misconception that they enter the class with an A and that all they have to do is not ‘goof up’ to hold onto that grade. Not true. The student enters the class with a zero and works up from there. All grades are earned.

- Students who attend all classes and complete all assignments competently can expect to earn the grade of C. C is average and is the level most students can expect to attain.

- Students who attend all classes, complete all assignments and demonstrate mastery over the basics of drawing can expect to earn a B. B is very good.

- Students who attend all classes, complete all assignments and demonstrate exceptional ability and understanding of drawing can expect to earn an A. A is for excellent work, work that is outstanding in every aspect. It is work that everyone admires.

A midterm grade shall be awarded for all students in this course. The grade awarded may not necessarily be based on 50% of the course requirements and may or may not differ from the final grade. This grade will be an average of all grades received up to midterm.

Your final grade will be composed of:
25% Sketchbook/homework/writing assignments
25% Midterm portfolio grade
50% Final portfolio grade

LATE WORK
Each drawing will have an announced due date. Drawings are due at the beginning of class on due dates. Late drawings will receive a 10% deduction for each class day late. If a drawing is late due to a documented excused absence, there will be no grade penalty.

APSU POLICIES
Misconduct
The University’s policies on academic and classroom misconduct will be strictly enforced. Academic and classroom misconduct will not be tolerated. Please refer to your copy of the student handbook for all matters pertaining to misconduct. Persistent disruption of the learning environment will result in my asking you to drop the course or automatic failure.

Minors in the Classroom
Minors (any non-student under the age of 18) accompanying staff, faculty, students, or visitors on campus are not permitted in the classroom.

CLASS ETIQUETTE
Be respectful. Put your cell phone on vibrate or turn it off before class. If you have an emergency, please exit the classroom quietly. Do not use IPODS, laptops, pagers, or any other noise-making electronic gadget during class time. These may be used during breaks.
